This past April 22 detected a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Coincidentally, the unfortunate accident occurred on the same day that is celebrated worldwide on Earth Day. This oil spill into Gulf of Mexico is a real ecological disaster, a new threat to the environment.
The oil spill has already reached more than 1,550 km2 and continues to move toward this area, ranging from the coast of Louisiana to the coasts of Alabama and Mississippi. British Petroleum Technicians have done everything possible to stop the oil spill and to that end, have used a robotic underwater vehicles that were submerged in the water of the Gulf of Mexico more than a mile from profundidada. Undoubtedly, the event has been unfortunate label it "environmental disaster" and there is alarm at the "black tide". The main objective of the technicians and the people of the Coast Guard is to deal with controlling the well affected, to stop the spill, rescue and clean the area.
As explained by Mary Landry, Coast Guard Admiral, the emerging oil well about 160 thousand liters of oil per day, equivalent to one thousand barrels per day, producing major maritime pollution and oily spots. The platform "Deepwater Horizon" is the one which exploded on 22, leaving 11 workers missing. British Petroleum (BP) is the operator that has leased to the platform. British Petroleum is the largest oil extractor in the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, BP did not hesitate to immediately mobilize teams qualified for the containment and concentration of oil and about 32 ships float lines. The company explained that they are ready for use about 380,000 gallons of oil solvent, approximately one third of these compounds worldwide. Finally, senators confirmed that the explosion of the platform goes beyond being a tragedy for the victims and that also means remembering the real risks of oil exploration. The Secretary of the Navy of Mexico, is studying the impact that this natural disaster has on the environment while continuing alertness.

I read today that the spill area has widened dramatically. Also that clean up efforts are being hindered because of waves and high winds. Apparently, oil is still gushing out of the well and into the sea.

Since we are living on the opposite side of the planet, somebody would say - it is not on our concern, let them cope by themselves. But everyday life and I should say - recent disasters, that are coming with increasing frequency, are telling us how much we are close and dependant to each other. People and nature suffering there, but whole planet is impacted. Looks like events are coming to tell us that despite the money we have in our pockets and brains in our heads, everybody is vulnerable and humans have to help and support each other. And the countries also. As from the security point of view, is obvious how important is that every part is well concerned in details and responsibility. I am convinced that BP with all technologies at home, procedures and rules is doing best possible job. But as the disaster happens, than it means that something is wrong with the technologies of drilling the sea. If not, there is a lack of good supervision of people working there. I hope professionals in that business will do their homework, in order avoid such in the future. I saw some sources appeal for stopping offshore drilling. I can't estimate how big is that, but would not expect that those petrol sharks will refrain from that activity, just for the health of the planet.

The oil spill caused by the collapse of a platform on the 20th of April has reached the Mississippi Delta a few hours and is taken through a specialized probes NASA [Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) / Terra Satellite ].
Bad weather has hampered the cleanup efforts in the Gulf has reached almost 800 thousand liters of oil a day, is feared to increase the passage of days.

The Environment minister, Rafael Elvira Quesada, said that Mexico is suing the company British Petroleum (BP) in the event of environmental damage is found on national territory, after a study to be conducted when "contain the spill" in the Gulf of Mexico. "We have a scientific, technical impacts to the environment, it be (sic) able to produce a legal instrument to sue the company, and again I emphasize to the company, not the U.S. government" official confirmed in an interview with W Radio.
Elvira Quesada said he will make a "binational study in the Gulf of Mexico in the south (part of Mexico) and North (United States) to determine the environmental impact of oil spill that caused the collapse of a BP platform ago few weeks.
In addition, will also perform "monitoring to know how many turtles come to lay their eggs Lora our shores to see if there was a decline and if it was by the spill." This species is an indicator of environmental impact. These turtles get out of the Gulf of Mexico north to south, specifically to Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
Damage to environment
The Environment minister listed three Mexican ecosystem consequences:
1 .- The greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur, then they set fire to oil in the Gulf. 2 .- The effect on ocean currents, as though the tide is reflected on the surface, there is also an important part in the seabed. 3 .- The decline of species, such as Lora turtles, which nest on Mexican coast.
The official said that environmental damage could last "months or even years."

It is really bad what happened there and as it still continues to leak. It is direct impact on Mexico and USA, but also indirectly to the other world. Such case will make all oil companies and the governments to reconsider off shore activities. As we, in Europe, have a strong financial crysis, seems that the whole world is in trouble. Please, give more details, when available. It is interesting for me, also from technical point of view - how they are going to find a solution for that disaster. Hopefully soon ! With all my respect !

I heard today that they are are now able to capture some of the leaking oil by inserting a tube in the broken pipe. But, they still are not getting all of the oil.

Follow the oil spill and is more than what is said officially 05/18/10
Although the oil giant BP claims to have had some success in containing the oil, it continues to flow in torrents and pouring into the Gulf of Mexico. BP says it succeeded in inserting a tube into the damaged well and transfer of the oil at a drilling platform on the surface.
But a substantial amount of oil still leaking at the bottom of the Gulf and BP has failed to close the hole. Up to 70,000 barrels of oil have been leaking daily from the Gulf exploded Deepwater Horizon platform on 20 April.
Ken Wells, chief executive of BP, spoke to reporters in Houston and said: "Oil and gas have been leaking through the bottom end of the column. And what we did was to introduce a tool at the end of the column for begin to remove part of the flow and take you directly to the drilling vessel to prevent from entering the Gulf of Mexico. "
On the other hand, more evidence has emerged that the magnitude of the oil spill is much larger than BP and the government publicly acknowledged. Marine scientists said they found huge plumes of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
The New York Times reports that an oil column is ten miles long and three wide and stains with a thickness of 300 feet. Scientists are concerned that the columns eventually cause a big drop in oxygen levels in the Gulf that much of the nearby marine life is annihilated.

05-20-2010 01:40 pm -5 G.M.T.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration USA (NOAA) announced today that "small portions" of black spot of oil that moves through the Gulf of Mexico have entered the mainstream marina.
The NOAA said that these "slight or very slight" oil slick layers can be caught in a sort of "swirl as meaning clockwise" in the midst of the Gulf, and thus escape the flow current.
Florida authorities pointed out that this small amount of oil absorbed by the ocean current is unlikely to cause substantial damage, and it can also evaporate on their way to the Straits of Florida and the southeastern coast.
NOAA experts said that the black stain of oil, reaching the southern coast of Florida pushed by the winds, it would in "isolated areas" in the form of tar (pieces of tar).
"Both the situation of the Gulf Stream as the location of the oil spill are always changing and dynamic," said NOAA.
For Daniel Suman, Professor, Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Miami (UM), the "big question" is posed by oil layers located at great depth and the possibility of being washed away, but still , told Efe, is too early to "predict the magnitude of the impact on Florida."
However, explained that the impact of the "black tide" in the Florida Keys (south end of the state), absorbed by the current, its impact on tourism and the fragile ecosystem of the archipelago, which is considered a coral reef of the three largest in the world, can be catastrophic.
Black spot of oil can affect not only the "marine sanctuary and coral reef of the Keys, but cause serious damage and the mangroves of the Miami-Dade County, the Everglades National Park, and to the beaches of Miami, in the Atlantic, said Suman.
Officials estimate that the oil spill from the platform that caught fire last April 20 and sank two days can reach the Florida Keys in the next ten days.
Meanwhile, many residents in Key West have volunteered to assist in cleaning up the beaches, in the unlikely event that the tar finally appears in that area.
In various parts of Florida's west coast have been deployed and about 70 miles of floating barriers and nearly two thousand miles of beaches that offers the state stay clean and open to the public, according to the Department of Florida Environmental Protection (DEP).
On the other hand, Florida's fishing industry is concerned that the NOAA has expanded on Tuesday to 19% the space of the sea basin restricted to fishing as a result of uncontrolled discharge of oil.

I know BP is trying to stop the flow of oil escaping from under the water but they seem to be having little success. If the reports of their failure are true then this is turning out to be real disaster! I also heard report today that the Obama Administration is exaggerating the reports on the problem which may or may not be true.
I'm also still wondering as to why Obama sent in SWAT teams to inspect other oil rigs in the Gulf. Sense when are SWAT teams qualified to inspect oil rigs? A growing number of people are suspecting this might have been a terrorist attack that the Obama administration is trying to hide. What do you think?

I do not believe it ! Or, frankly, I do not want to believe it. That will be a new ear of terrorism. I can't remember, terrorism against petrol company, with final target any state. Excluding that happened several times in Nigeria, those were criminal deeds. But if that, in the Gulf of Mexico, has been a terrorist attack, that is really a new era of war. I can't imagine how much the petrol companies have to spend for investigation, internal security IT procedures, against cyber attacks and real one, than all guards, or may be private army. Those will bring the cost of petrol to mountain high ! If true, that is well planned. More technological world, more vulnerability. I very much hope, that is not true !

At least 316 birds were found dead on the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida in the first five weeks since the bombing of the BP oil platform.
Posted: 05/25/2010 22.09 am -5 GMT
Pelicans affected by the spill den the Gulf. Ap File Los Angeles. More than 300 seabirds, mostly brown pelicans and gannets, were found dead in the U.S. Gulf coast of Mexico in the first five weeks since the start of a massive oil spill off Louisiana, wildlife officials reported.
All 316 birds found dead on the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, plus another 10 who died or were culled in rehabilitation centers of wildlife after being captured alive, well above the 31 surviving birds found oil to date.
The figure was released Monday by the Wildlife Service and U.S. Navy and includes animals with crude oil in the body and some with visible signs of oil contamination.
All birds found are counted as potential victims of the oil that comes from the April 20, a subsea well in the Gulf of Mexico due to its proximity to the landfill, said Jay Holcomb, director of the bird rescue center at Fort Jackson, Florida.
The animals will eventually be analyzed to determine more conclusively whether they were contaminated by the BP oil spill, he said.
Holcomb, director of the International Bird Rescue Research and based in California, expects the rate of mortality for seabirds, many of them in the middle of the breeding season is increased sharply, especially if hurricanes are generated move into the region and impacting the coastline around oil.
"The potential is there this is catastrophic, because there is a massive amount of oil in the water and is still rising, and there are many birds that are nesting and using the coast," he said.
"If oil moving tropical storms, we see the real impact," he said.
The birds most affected so far by the oil in the Gulf are the ones that feed plunging into the sea to fish, including the brown pelican, which last year was removed from the list of endangered species, and Gannets said Holcomb.
But shorebirds and songbirds will face increasing risks as oil pollutes the beaches and marshes of the region.
Oil affects the insulating properties of feathers of birds, exposing them to cold and complicating its ability to float, swim and fly. The chemicals in the oil can also burn the skin and irritate your eyes. The birds also end up ingesting oil when plunging into the sea, which hurts their digestive tracts.
